Nearly three miles south west of the headland I was standing on is the Chicken Rock Lighthouse. This 44 metre granite tower was completed in 1873 and brought into use two years later. Apparently the earlier lights Calf of Man Lights could not be depended upon because of the prevalence of fog on the Calf. David and Thomas Stevenson were the engineers responsible for constructing the lighthouse. On 23rd December 1960 it was seriously damaged internally by fire and in 1961 it was automated. Chicken Rock is the closest piece of land to the deepest part of the Irish Sea which plunges to 50 fathoms south west of the islet. Mother Carey’s chickens in legend, were sent to warn sailors of approaching storms.
